redfive:

so i’m sitting in music class, when i have a very startling thought:

the professor says things like, “you may have heard this song on this soundtrack, blah blah” and i’m thinking - who the heck hasn’t heard this song?  it used to be on the radio, it’s a classic oldie, who doesn’t know it?

then i realized, these kids really DON’T know the songs.  they have no flipping idea who the Temptations, Diana Ross, or the Supremes are, or what Motown is… how is this even possible?  nowadays, their minds are too filled with names like Bieber and B.O.B. and Black Eyed Peas, and who knows what else.  how can they not know songs like “You Can’t Hurry Love” or “My Girl”?  oh yeah, and of course they know the riff from “Misirlou” by the Beach Boys as the song “Pump It” by the Black Eyed Peas, or whatever the heck it’s called.  how can they not know that was a sample of a song?!  it’s like people thinking the bass riff from “Ice Ice Baby” is original and not a sample from Queen…

Sorry, but since you concentrated so much on details I wanted to note that it is Dick Dale’s version of Misirlou (the original Surf Rock version), not the Beach Boys version that is sampled in Pump It.

Otherwise, I completely agree. I assume you’re talking about Music 140? That was probably my favourite class of university and I couldn’t believe how many people were taking it just because it was a bird course.
